Linzer Cookies
Gertie enjoys her mother's Linzer cookies when she comes home from school. You may want to enjoy some, too. Here's a recipe for Linzer cookies from Sugar Spun Run.
Pigs in a Blanket
Gertie is also enchanted by pigs in a blanket, a once common finger treat appetizer made of mini-sausages in a dough, which I loved when I was a kid. I used to make them with my mother using Pillsbury crescent rolls with cocktail sausages, but puff pastry or pizza dough can be used too. Of course, during Gertie's time, the dough was probably made from scratch. So I'm including a simple version with pre-made rolls and a more complicated version for those who want to make their own dough.
Glory Buns
In Chapter 38, Sarah makes Glory Buns because they are Kurt's favorite from a recipe she has received from her neighbor. Here is the recipe.
